01Chapter map & what health means

This chapter is almost pure recall — pathogen names, vectors, antibody types, karyotype-style facts. It reliably yields 3–4 NEET questions, and every one of them is winnable if the tables below are memorised cleanly. The losses here are never conceptual; they are name-swaps.

Definition to write verbatim

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being — not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is affected by genetic disorders, infections, lifestyle, food and water, rest and exercise, and personal hygiene.

The name-swaps that cost marks

  • Anopheles carries malaria; Culex carries filariasis; Aedes carries dengue and chikungunya.
  • Housefly is the mechanical carrier of amoebiasis — it does not host a life-cycle stage, unlike the mosquito in malaria.
  • The common cold does not reach the lungs. Pneumonia is the one that fills the alveoli.

03Life cycle of Plasmodium

Two hosts. Humans are the secondary (intermediate) host where asexual multiplication occurs; the female Anopheles mosquito is the primary (definitive) host where the sexual phase is completed.

The fever is caused by haemozoin, released when infected red blood cells rupture — not by the parasite entering the cell.

Three lines that answer most malaria questions

  • The infective stage to humans is the sporozoite; the stage infective to the mosquito is the gametocyte.
  • Sexual reproduction happens in the mosquito, which is why the mosquito is the primary host even though we call it the vector.
  • Only the female Anopheles bites for blood — she needs it for egg development.

05AIDS — Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome

Caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a retrovirus — it has RNA and an envelope, and reverse transcribes its genome into DNA. First reported in 1981.

Transmission

Prevention — NACO points

Make blood from licensed blood banks safe from HIV, use disposable needles and syringes, distribute free condoms, control drug abuse, advocate safe sex, and promote regular check-ups. HIV/AIDS-infected people need help and sympathy, not isolation — that line is asked directly.

06Cancer

In a normal cell, growth and differentiation are strictly regulated. Cancer cells have lost contact inhibition — the property by which contact with other cells stops uncontrolled growth — so they divide continuously and pile up into a mass of cells called a tumour.

Loss of contact inhibition → uncontrolled division. Metastasis → the property that makes a tumour malignant. Proto-oncogene → the normal gene; oncogene → the activated cancer-causing form.

Why adolescents, and what to watch for

Long-term consequences

Damage to the nervous system and liver cirrhosis from alcohol; in pregnant women, harm to the growing foetus. Intravenous drug use with shared needles is a major route for AIDS and hepatitis B. Anabolic steroid misuse causes acne, aggression, and in females masculinisation, menstrual irregularity, deepening of voice, and in males reduced sperm production and enlargement of the prostate.

Final checklist

  1. Vector questions: Anopheles = malaria, Culex = filariasis, housefly = amoebiasis (mechanical only).
  2. Antibody questions: match the class to the place (colostrum, placenta, allergy, B-cell surface, first response).
  3. Immunity questions: ask first whether it has memory. Memory ⇒ acquired; no memory ⇒ innate.
  4. Assertion–reason on immunity is a recurring loss — check whether the reason is a true statement and the correct explanation.
  5. Do not confuse the primary lymphoid organs (maturation) with the secondary ones (antigen encounter).
